Rose Hill South Church History

            In the beginning in 1886, a group of believers in Christ decided to build a church. Among this group were Dec. Bob Ellis, R. Veal Mitchell, Susie Davis, Corene Williams, Marcella Young, Margaret Wheeler, and Dec. Tom Dean. This church was named Rose Hill South Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Nelson Higgins as Pastor.

            There was no heating system, but no one complained because everyone had the warmth of God in their hearts. The little wooden church sat over the levee where members had to travel over the ramp to the Old Warfield Road. The church membership grew greatly. The same building in later years under new leadership with the late Rev. Jim Thomas.

·         1927 the church withstood a flood, storms, snow, and ice.

·         1930 the church was rebuilt under the leadership of the late Rev. Clay Brooks, following him, came Rev. J. A. Alexander, who was a strong leader for forty years. Rev. Milton Evans became Pastor; his leadership lasted for nearly eight years.

·         1983 Dr. Aaron King, Jr., our current pastor continued the church’s journey. Considerable growth and changes took place in the church in the 90’s and 2000’s.

·         1992 the old church was torn down and a new church was constructed on the same soil under the leadership of Rev. Aaron King, Jr. New furniture was purchased, new central heat and air conditioning, concrete parking lot, and choir robes were purchased.

·         1996 the members burned the mortgage on the church. THANK GOD WE MADE IT!

·         July 1997 a picnic was held on the church ground, there were food, games, and plenty of enjoyment.

·         July 1998 a group of the church members traveled to Memphis, TN to visit Liberty Land, and a new van was purchased for the Church.

·         July 1999 the mass choir participated in the Pre-Convention Musical of the General Missionary Baptist and Educational State Conventional of Mississippi in Greenville. Our church was the host for the Youth Department. Our first Vacation Bible School was organized by our very own 1st Lady, Mrs. Barbara T. King.

·         December 1999 our church entered a float in the Christmas Parade and won 2nd Place.

·         January 1, 2000 our church hosted the Emancipation of the Education State Convention.

·         January 9, 2000 the ushers started wearing all burgundy uniforms during the Fall.

·         June 2000 a new PA System was installed.

·         August 2000 new tables and chairs were purchased for the Fellowship Hall.

·         In 2000 there were three souls saved.

·         2001 a group of church members traveled to Jackson, MS to tour the Majesty of Spain Exhibit and dined at Ryan’s.

·         April 2002 our church was given a complete change, new secretary office, storage room, enlargement of the pastor’s office, new furniture, larger kitchen, new refrigerator, stove, new fellowship hall, mirrors, wall pictures, bench upholstery, tables and chairs, new pews, sofa, coffee table, prayer bench, rug, new carpet, and a color copy machine.

·         May 2002 the church held a dedicatory service.

·         August 5-9, 2002 Vacation Bible School was held and the directors were Dec. Ricky Randle and Dec. Luellen Carter.

·         In 2002 there were ten souls saved.

·         June 2003 a Formal Tea was organized by Mother Louvinia Davis held in the fellowship hall of the church.

·         July 15, 2003 the youth department participated in the General Missionary Baptist and Educational State Convention in Clarksdale, MS.

·         July 26, 2003 a picnic was held on the church ground.

·         In 2003 there were ten souls saved.

·         In 2004 we held our 1st Amazing Grace Program.

·         In 2004 there were four souls saved.

·         July 12, 2004 our church hosted the General Missionary Baptist and Educational State Convention of Mississippi.

·         In 2004 we purchased a television, dvd player, and a 3 in 1 copy machine.

·         In 2004 a computer was donated to the church from Congressmen Bennie Thompson.

·         May 2005 we paid our Church’s Mortgage in full. The youth department participated in the General Missionary Baptist and Educational State Convention in Clarksdale, MS.

·         July 12, 2005 the youth department participated in the General Missionary Baptist and Educational State Convention in Cleveland, MS.

·         In 2005 there were two souls saved.

·         In June 2006 Dr. Aaron King, Jr. along with the church family held an ordination service for Rev. Maurice Rankins.

·         June 2006 a picnic was held.

·         October 2006 Ushers changed their uniforms to navy blue for the Fall and white for the Summer.

·         In 2006 there were fifteen souls saved.

·         May 2007 a website for the church was created by Sis. Porcha Morehead. (http://rosehillsouth.tripod.com)

·         May 2007 our Church hosted the General Missionary Baptist and Educational County Congress of Mississippi.

·         July 2007 our youth department participated in the “Youth on the Move for Christ” workshop/ Concert at the New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church. The oldest members of the church were recognized and presented gifts for the first time.

·         October 12, 2007 Chafer Serving Pans were purchased for the church.

·         In 2007 there were five souls saved.

·         February 2008 the PA System was upgraded.

·         April 2008 our church received new seating and tile for the entrance of the church.

·         May 2008 the youth department participated in the Washington County Educational Association of Mississippi.

·         In 2008 there were two souls saved.

·         August 24, 2008 we set another milestone celebrating 122 years together. “The Church that is Built upon a Solid Rock”.

·         November 2008 Rose Hill South M. B. Church and Greater St. Matthews M. B. Church came together and prepared one of the meals for the Seven Season “Taste of Foods” event sponsored by the Washington County General Baptist Educational Association of Mississippi and our own pastor, Dr. Aaron King, Jr., was the Moderator.

·         January 2009 Minister Rankins told us to “Be On Time in 2009”. Our pastor, Dr. Aaron King, Jr. delivered one of his most powerful messages: “Facing The Future with Confidence” (Joshua 1: 6-9).

·         February 2009 We stood to “Let Our Light Shine in the year of 2009”. A new piano was purchased for the church.

·         July 2009 we purchased a new air conditioner for the sanctuary.

·         August 2009 another milestone, 123 years was celebrated here at Rose Hill South M. B. Church.

·         October 3, 2009 Rev. and Mrs. King were honored with their 1st Pre-Anniversary White Tea. It was a night of song and praise. Everyone wore white attire. Tea cakes, finger sandwiches, and several varieties of Tea were served.

·         October 25, 2009 we hosted our 1st Praises in Pink Program. Celebrating National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Door prizes were given out; everyone who attended received a gift. Pink refreshments were served and a beautiful testimony was given, “Touched by an Angel” by Felicia King.

·         In 2009 one soul was saved.

·         March 2010 new stainless steel pots and pans were purchased for the kitchen.

·         August 2010 another milestone, 124 years and we stood stronger than ever. “Give Me the Church” Ephesians 5: 25-27. This topic was so powerful; we decided to do it again in 2010.

·         In 2010 there were three souls saved.

·         2011 The flood water Mississippi River reached its all time highest of a crest at 65ft. This caused water to seep into our sanctuary resulting in a new makeover for our sanctuary. The colors changed from burgundy to purple.

·         July 23, 2011 Rose Hill South M. B. Church along with Greater St. Matthews M. B. Church traveled to Hemingbough in St. Francisville, LA to share “God’s Day” with Rev. Maurice and Minister Denise Rankins as they dedicated their lives to the Lord as one.
